A man was arrested for allegedly swinging a chain saw at a rental vehicle occupied by a tourist family at Kamaole Beach Park III on Monday afternoon.

Keaka Paleka, 35, of Haiku was charged with first-degree criminal property damage, two counts of second-degree terroristic threatening and driving under the influence of alcohol.

His bail was set at $26,000.

According to a declaration filed in court to support the charges, a woman from Duxbury, Mass., reported that she and her family were loading belongings in their rented 2019 Ford Flex sport utility vehicle in the beach parking lot at 5:45 p.m. when a man who had been yelling at her, her teenage sons and husband earlier in the day returned with a chain saw.

The family got into the vehicle and began reversing out of a stall when the man, later identified as Paleka, swung the running chain saw at the vehicle and hit the rear driver’s side window and door window trim, causing about $1,000 in damage, according to the declaration.

The woman, who was sitting in the rear driver’s side seat closest to Paleka, reported she feared for her life and her family’s life.

The family left the parking lot to call police and reported that Paleka left the parking lot in a 2018 Toyota 4Runner.

Paleka was located at the Kihei Boat Ramp at 6:20 p.m. and also was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police.
